It always amazes me that at this time of year everyone wants to bring everything to an end, to close off certain things or complete projects and it all has to be done before Christmas Day as if this particular day was like a magic full stop… You see people rushing around the shops buying everything they can lay their hands on and engaging in the wonderful game called ‘the car park shuffle’ (some people get so angry….)… I think that’s why we call this the silly season.
However it is a good time to reflect on what we have been doing throughout the year and a time to take a look at the traditions we’ve set up for ourselves. Some traditions are great… like Christmas Pudding… Low Fat, Low Carb of course… but some traditions are just plain dumb.
In the Church today we pride ourselves on being contemporary and relevant… sad to say we are not quite as relevant as we proclaim to be. In many cases we fall into the trap we once fought long and hard against. The trap of doing the same things the same way and expecting the same results.
I think its time to examine how we do a whole lot of things, to bring the spontenaity back into the life of the Church and our services, surprise people and do something you’ve never done before in church… go on, take a risk, jump out of the boat… after all this is the only way that you’re going to be able to start walking on water… What about your church? Have you fallen into a routine, have you become a victim of a busy lifestyle and become too busy to think of some fresh ways of approaching church, life and your own leadership. What worked yesterday no longer works today, what was hip and cool yesterday is no longer hip and cool today. Lets change and be the change.
Have a great week!
David
